At AZ Vitality & Wellness in Peoria, AZ, we often work with compounding pharmacies to provide customized medications that better fit each patient’s needs.

So, last week, my husband and I took a break from the AZ Vitality and Wellness clinic and took a weekend trip to New Mexico when the topic of Compounding Pharmacies came up (no, I do not know how we got on the subject, but we did).

What Makes Compounding Pharmacies Different?

One of his questions was, “Why do you prefer Compounding Pharmacies over brand-name pharmacies?” After reflection, I answered: “Because they are awesome!!” 

While I thought that was a great answer, he said, “Ok, why are they awesome?” Now I had to reflect even more, and here is why I think Compounding Pharmacies are fantastic:

Compounding Pharmacies mix, or compound, the medications themselves, whereas Retail Pharmacies distribute medications from manufacturers. This results in the chain between the patient and the medication source being much shorter.  

Personalized Medication, Tailored for You

Since Compounding Pharmacies mix medications themselves, they can provide prescriptions tailored to the patient’s needs. For example, say you have a medication manufactured by a company that contains a substance to which the patient is allergic.

What are the patient’s options?

  • Not take the medication, and hope for the best
  • Take the medication, and hope for the best.
  • Take the medication and try to manage the issue with another medication.
  • Go through a Compounding Pharmacy, and they remove the problem ingredient.

Better Access and Fewer Shortages

Ever walked into your favorite Retail Pharmacy only to be told they are out of your medication? This is usually the result of Retail Pharmacies being subject to drug manufacturers’ production issues. Compounding Pharmacies mix medicines as they are requested and are less impacted by the laws of supply and demand. 

Safe, Regulated, and Reliable

Medication mixed by a Compounding Pharmacy is subject to the regulations and requirements as the same medication produced by a drug manufacturer.

With those four answers, my husband agreed that Compounding Pharmacies were indeed awesome and hopes you do too!
