How it works

What Is Xeomin, and How Does a Wrinkle Relaxer Work?

Xeomin is a prescription wrinkle relaxer made by Merz. Like Botox, Dysport and Jeuveau, it’s a form of botulinum toxin type A. A tiny amount injected into a specific muscle blocks the nerve signal that tells that muscle to contract. The muscle relaxes, the skin over it stops folding, and the line softens over the next two weeks.

The FDA first approved Xeomin for frown lines in 2011 and, in 2024, for frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet treated together (FDA prescribing information). Xeomin is made without the accessory proteins found in some other brands. Merz says that may matter for people whose results have faded over time; the independent evidence on that is limited, so we won’t oversell it. What we can say is that it works well in our hands and our patients like it.

Wrinkle relaxer vs. filler: a relaxer softens lines caused by movement. A filler adds volume to a fold or hollow that’s there even when your face is still. We focus on wrinkle relaxers and don’t currently offer dermal fillers. If volume is the real issue, we’ll say so and point you to the right kind of provider.

Is Xeomin as Good as Botox?

Short answer: for most people, yes. All four are botulinum toxin type A, all are FDA-approved for frown lines, and head-to-head studies show similar results and similar duration. The differences are small, and the injector matters far more than the brand.

Units aren’t interchangeable between brands (Dysport uses about 2.5 to 3 units for every 1 unit of the others), so compare total price, not price per unit, if you’ve had a different brand before.

Your First Xeomin Visit, Step by Step

Talk and Map

We’ll ask you to frown, raise your brows and smile, then mark where your muscles pull. You’ll see the plan and total before anything else happens.

The Injections

Skin is cleaned, then a series of tiny injections with a very fine needle. Most people describe each one as a quick pinch. Ten to fifteen minutes, start to finish.

The Rest of Your Day

Go back to work. Skip rubbing the area, hard workouts, saunas and lying face-down for the first 4 hours. Small bumps settle within the hour; a little bruise is possible.

Two-Week Check

Results build over about two weeks. If one side is working harder than the other, come back and we’ll even it out. We’d rather start conservative and add than overdo it.

Side Effects, Honestly

Common and short-lived: a small bruise, redness, a mild headache for a day or two. Uncommon: a heavy brow or drooping eyelid that wears off over a few weeks, which careful placement makes rare.

All botulinum toxin products carry an FDA boxed warning about the toxin spreading beyond the injection site. At cosmetic doses this is very rare, and we’ll go over it with you.

Injections for Excessive Underarm Sweating

If clinical-strength antiperspirant isn’t enough and you plan outfits around sweat marks, that’s hyperhidrosis, and it’s treatable. A grid of small injections under each arm blocks the nerve signal to overactive sweat glands. Sweating drops noticeably within about two weeks and the effect usually lasts 4 to 6 months or longer.

Botox is FDA-approved for severe underarm sweating; other brands are used off-label for it. We’ll tell you which product we’re using and why.

How much does Xeomin cost per unit?

Xeomin is priced per unit at AZ Vitality and Wellness; call or text 602-540-3547 for current per-unit pricing. A first visit usually uses 20 to 60 units depending on the areas treated. Your consultation is free and you’ll know your exact total before treatment.

They’re different brands of the same kind of medicine, botulinum toxin type A. Both are FDA-approved for frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet and last about the same length of time. Xeomin is made without the accessory proteins other brands contain. For most people the results are indistinguishable.

About 3 to 4 months for most people. Strong muscles, a fast metabolism and a very light dose can shorten that; regular treatment over time often stretches it.

You’ll notice the muscles weakening in about 3 to 4 days, with full results at around two weeks. We check in at two weeks and touch up if one side needs it.

Most people describe a quick pinch with each injection and nothing after. The needle is very fine and the whole thing takes 10 to 15 minutes. Ice is available if you’re nervous about it.

Not here. We dose to soften the line, not to stop the muscle, and we’d rather add a little at your two-week check than overdo it on day one. You’ll still raise your brows and smile with your eyes.

It depends on the area and how strong your muscles are. Frown lines usually take 15 to 20 units, the forehead 10 to 20, crow’s feet 12 to 24 for both sides, and the masseters 40 to 60. We’ll give you an exact count at your consultation.

For the first 4 hours, skip rubbing or massaging the area, strenuous exercise, saunas and lying face-down. Hold off on facials and alcohol for a day. Normal makeup and your normal day are fine.

Usually a small bruise, a little redness or a mild headache that passes within a day or two. Rarely, a heavy brow or drooping eyelid, which wears off as the medicine does. We go over the full list, including the FDA boxed warning, before you’re treated.

We ask you to wait. There isn’t enough safety data in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so we’d rather see you afterward.

Yes. Relaxing the masseter muscle is an off-label use that can ease clenching and gradually slim a square jawline over two to three months. It takes a larger dose than the upper face, and we’ll explain what to expect.

Not currently. We focus on wrinkle relaxers and needle-free options like EMFACE. If volume loss is your main concern, we’ll tell you so and suggest the right kind of provider.
