What TMJ Pain Usually Feels Like

Your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect your jaw to your skull, just in front of your ears. When the joint or the muscles around it are irritated, it’s called a TMJ disorder, or TMD. It’s common, especially in women, and much of it comes from muscles that are working too hard.

Safety first

When to See a Dentist or Physician First

We’re a nurse practitioner-led clinic, not a dental office. EMFACE TMJ is for sore, overworked jaw muscles. Some jaw problems need a dentist, oral surgeon or physician first, and we’ll tell you honestly if that’s you.

Call 911 if jaw pain comes with chest pressure or pain, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to your arm. Jaw pain can be a sign of a heart attack.

See a Dentist or Physician First If

  • Your jaw locks open or shut
  • The pain started after a fall, accident or blow to the face
  • Swelling, fever, or redness over the joint
  • Numbness or tingling in your face
  • Your bite suddenly changed, or a tooth hurts
  • Severe pain that keeps getting worse

How it works

How EMFACE TMJ Works

EMFACE is made by BTL, the company behind EMSCULPT NEO and EMVITAL. Its TMJ treatment places thin, hands-free pads over the big chewing muscles at the sides of your jaw and delivers two kinds of energy at the same time. BTL reports that EMFACE is FDA-cleared to treat TMJ dysfunction and associated pain, relieve symptoms of muscle spasm, and help maintain or increase jaw range of motion.

Gentle Warmth

Radiofrequency warms the muscle to help it relax and to increase blood flow to the area.

Muscle Re-Education

Muscle stimulation makes the jaw muscles contract and release in a steady rhythm, helping tight, overworked muscles let go.

Nothing in Your Mouth

No needles, no injections, no mouthpiece. The pads sit on your skin, and you lie back and rest for about 20 minutes.

What the Research Shows So Far

Published research on EMFACE for TMJ is still limited. BTL is running a study of 48 adults with TMJ pain who had four visits combining EMFACE with EMVITAL laser therapy, measuring pain, daily function and how far the jaw opens; results haven’t been published yet. We’ll tell you what we see in our own patients, and we’ll update this page when the data is out.

The bigger picture

Where EMFACE Fits in TMJ Care

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research recommends starting TMJ care with conservative, reversible treatments, and many TMJ problems get better on their own. EMFACE TMJ fits that approach: it doesn’t change your teeth, your bite or the joint itself.

It also works alongside the care you may already have. We don’t make night guards, adjust bites or do joint procedures; if you need those, we’ll point you to a dentist or oral surgeon.

FAQ

TMJ Treatment FAQs

At AZ Vitality and Wellness, EMFACE TMJ pricing depends on how many sessions your plan includes, so we don’t list one price online. Your consultation is free, includes a short demo, and ends with your exact price before you commit. Cherry payment plans are available for eligible patients.
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, the joint that connects your jaw to your skull in front of each ear. TMD, or temporomandibular disorder, is the name for problems with that joint and the chewing muscles around it, though most people just call it TMJ. Common signs are jaw pain, clenching, headaches at the temples, stiffness and clicking with pain.
EMFACE is a device made by BTL. For TMJ, thin hands-free pads over your jaw muscles deliver gentle radiofrequency warmth, which helps the muscle relax and increases blood flow, and muscle stimulation, which makes tight muscles contract and release. There are no needles and nothing goes in your mouth.
It’s designed for TMJ pain that comes from tight, overworked jaw muscles, and many people feel their jaw loosen up over a series of sessions. Published research is still limited; BTL is running a study that hasn’t reported results yet. Your provider will tell you at your consultation whether it’s likely to help your pain.
BTL’s standard plan is a series of about 4 sessions of about 20 minutes. Your provider sets the spacing and tells you at your free consultation whether you might need follow-up sessions.
Most people find it relaxing. You’ll feel warmth and your jaw muscles tightening and releasing in a steady rhythm. Your provider adjusts the intensity so it stays comfortable.
Some people feel relief after the first session, and most notice it building over the series. How long relief lasts hasn’t been studied yet, and TMJ pain often comes and goes, so many people plan a follow-up session when a flare starts.
Not always. You don’t need a referral to book. But see a dentist, oral surgeon or physician first if your jaw locks open or shut, the pain followed an injury, you have swelling, fever or numbness, or your bite suddenly changed. If we find a red flag at your consultation, we’ll point you to the right place.
Yes. EMFACE TMJ works alongside a night guard from your dentist, physical therapy and home care. It doesn’t replace them.
Yes. We use Xeomin, a wrinkle relaxer similar to Botox. Small injections into the masseter, the big chewing muscle at the side of your jaw, can relax heavy clenching and can slim the lower face over a few months. It’s an off-label use, and research on neurotoxin for TMJ pain is still unclear, so your provider will walk you through whether it fits. Some people combine it with EMFACE TMJ. See our cosmetic injections page.
They work differently. Xeomin or Botox relaxes the jaw muscle for a few months with small injections, and is usually aimed at heavy clenching. EMFACE TMJ uses warmth and muscle stimulation with no needles, in a series of sessions. Neither has strong published research for TMJ pain yet. Your provider will help you choose, and some people use both.
It depends on what’s going on. See a dentist first if your bite has changed, a tooth hurts or your jaw locks; dentists, oral surgeons and orofacial pain providers treat the joint itself. For sore, tight jaw muscles and clenching without red flags, our nurse practitioners can check you, offer EMFACE TMJ or Xeomin, and refer you when you need more.
Often, yes. Many TMJ problems are short-lived and settle with gentle self-care like soft foods, warmth and resting the jaw. Some keep coming back or become long-lasting. If the pain keeps returning or gets in the way of eating, sleeping or work, it’s worth getting checked.
It can. TMJ problems can cause pain that spreads to the temples, face and neck, and some people notice ear fullness, ringing or dizziness. Ear pain can also come from an ear infection or another ear problem, so have your ears checked if you’re not sure where it’s coming from.
Clicking or popping on its own, with no pain, is common and usually doesn’t need treatment. Clicking that comes with pain, stiffness or a jaw that catches is worth getting checked.
Yes, for many people. Stress often shows up as clenching during the day or grinding at night, which overworks the jaw muscles. Noticing when you clench and letting your teeth part can help, along with treatment.
EMFACE TMJ isn’t right if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, have a pacemaker, defibrillator or other implanted electronic device, have metal implants in your jaw or face, have an active infection, cold sore, open wound or rash on your face, or have cancer or are in cancer treatment. Recent injections or surgery in the area, epilepsy or another neurological condition, and blood thinners also need a conversation with your provider first.
We don’t bill medical or dental insurance for EMFACE TMJ. Some HSA and FSA plans may cover treatment for TMJ pain, so check with your plan. Cherry payment plans let eligible patients pay over time.
BTL, the maker, reports that EMFACE is FDA-cleared to treat TMJ dysfunction and associated pain, relieve symptoms of muscle spasm, and help maintain or increase jaw range of motion.
