B12, explained

What Does a B12 Shot Do?

Vitamin B12 helps your body make healthy red blood cells, keeps your nerves working and helps turn the food you eat into energy. When you’re low, you can feel tired, weak or foggy, or notice tingling in your hands and feet.

A B12 shot puts B12 into a muscle, so it doesn’t depend on your stomach and gut to absorb it. That’s why shots are the usual treatment when absorption is the problem. If your B12 level is already normal, though, extra B12 isn’t proven to boost your energy.

Who Tends to Run Low on B12

Adults over 50, since many make less stomach acid
Vegans and vegetarians, or anyone who eats little animal food
People taking metformin or acid reducers like omeprazole for a long time
Anyone who’s had weight loss surgery or other stomach or bowel surgery
People with pernicious anemia, celiac disease or Crohn’s disease

What a B12 Shot Won’t Do

Our clinic is in North Peoria at 83rd Avenue and Happy Valley Road, with free parking right outside. Patients come from across the West Valley. Arrowhead is about 11 minutes away, Norterra and Vistancia about 14, Sun City West about 16 and Surprise about 21.

What does a B12 shot do?

Vitamin B12 helps your body make red blood cells, keep your nerves healthy and turn food into energy. A B12 shot delivers it into a muscle, so it doesn’t rely on your gut to absorb it. If you’re low, raising your level can ease tiredness, weakness and tingling over time. If your level is already normal, extra B12 isn’t proven to boost energy.

Can I walk in for a B12 shot, or do I need an appointment?

Walk-ins are welcome whenever we’re open: Tuesday through Friday 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday 10 am to 3 pm. You can also call or text 602-540-3547 ahead. Current patients can book a shot online. On your first visit, we’ll review your health history before your shot, and there’s no consultation fee when you’re only here for shots.

Are B12 shots safe?

For most adults, yes. B12 hasn’t been shown to cause harm even at high doses, and your body clears what it doesn’t need. Allergic reactions are rare. Our licensed clinical team gives every shot after a review of your health history. Tell us if you’re pregnant, take a blood thinner or have reacted to an injection before.

What are the side effects of B12 injections?

The most common are soreness, redness or a small bruise where the shot went in. Some people notice mild diarrhea, itching or a brief warm feeling. Serious allergic reactions are rare. Tell us right away if you notice hives, swelling or trouble breathing.

How often can you get a B12 shot?

It depends on why you’re getting it. If a blood test shows you’re low, your provider will set a schedule, often more frequent at first and then monthly. If you’re getting B12 for general wellness, your provider can tell you how often makes sense. There’s no benefit to more B12 than your body uses.

How long does it take for a B12 shot to work?

If you’re low, many people start to feel less tired within a few days to a couple of weeks. Blood counts take weeks to recover, and nerve symptoms like tingling can take months. If your level was already normal, you may not notice a change.

Is a B12 shot better than taking B12 pills?

Not always. Research shows high-dose B12 pills raise low levels about as well as shots for many people. Shots make sense when your body has trouble absorbing B12, such as with pernicious anemia, weight loss surgery or some gut conditions, or if you’d rather not take a daily pill. Do I need a blood test before a vitamin shot?

Not for every shot. If you want a shot to correct a low level, or you have symptoms like ongoing fatigue or tingling, a blood test first shows whether you’re actually low. We draw labs right here in the clinic.

Do lipotropic (lipo) shots help you lose weight?

Not on their own. Lipotropic shots like our Mega Burn combine amino acids (methionine, inositol and choline) with B vitamins and vitamin C. Those nutrients play a role in how your body processes fat, but lipotropic shots haven’t been shown to cause weight loss by themselves. Some patients add them to a full medical weight loss plan with nutrition, activity and, when it fits, medication.

Where is the shot given, and does it hurt?

Most vitamin shots go into the muscle of your upper arm. You’ll feel a quick pinch that lasts a few seconds, and the spot may be a little sore for a day.

Does insurance cover vitamin shots?
